Carlos Cazalis
Keynote Speaker:
Friday, May 6, 2011
Carlos Cazalis grew into documentary photography out of the need to express the many transitions he experienced as a child witnessing the effects of poverty and the oppression of military dictatorships in the Americas. He firmly believes in participatory engagement with the livelihood of his subjects, and in part because of this, his work has been recognized as being bold, upfront and honest in showing the human soul in dire situations. Cazalis is presently photographing a long-term project about mega cities, demonstrating the loneliness a city can inherently bring to an individual who must live surrounded by a man made environment, losing but always yearning the contact with nature. In 2009 he received a World Press Photo 1st prize award for his mega city work in São Paulo, Brazil. Cazalis has an MA from Parsons School of Design where he taught digital imaging and multimedia from 1999-2003.

Jeff Harris
Keynote Speaker:
Saturday, May 7, 2011
Toronto based artist, Jeff Harris, has made a selfportrait every day since January 1, 1999. When this series first appeared online, it was at the vanguard of the blogging revolution, and in 2011 still stands well above the crowd. The site was nominated three years in a row for a Webby Award, and has been featured in The Globe and Mail, USA Today and The New York Times. The innovative nature of the photographs and website, the participation of relevant famous figures (Al Gore, Isabella Rossellini and Gene Simmons are among the contributing photographers), and the sheer magnitude and persistence of this project make the work very poignant, accessible and exciting to the public. This poignancy is amplified by Jeff’s recent life-altering cancer diagnosis in November 2008.
