B3 –Reuters Pictures Online and in the Classroom

As one of the most respected international news agencies, Reuters’ photographers capture our world each day. In this unique session you will learn about the editing process and the pitfalls and perks for an online display of photography. The challenge of incorporating reader submitted images into the selection process, and what the rise of this user-generated content can mean for the photographic industry. In 2010, Reuters introduced the Full Focus online section. Learn how this large display of images can be used in the classroom.

B4 –Photography Course Profiles and the New Arts Curriculum

An introduction and overview of the new Ministry of Education funded Special Series Course Profiles, specifically Photography. In addition to being the editor of the Photography profiles, Mari was also on the writing and revision team for the revised Arts Curriculum. She will be able to answer questions and give an overview of major changes and directions in the curriculum, and how this affects photography specifically. Please bring a USB.

B5 – Photography Tour to New York

Have you ever wanted your students to gain a first hand experience of the MOMA, the Met, the Guggenheim, the Whitney, the International Centre for Photography and combine with photo opts of New York landmarks but felt the logistics were overwhelming? This workshop will help establish the necessary information; take you through the protocol, the process and clarify issues around responsibilities re: staff and students; travel documents; selecting a travel agency; costs; what to see and travel survival.

B6 – Diving into Digital

This workshop is designed for teachers who are either starting a new digital photography course or transforming an existing traditional photography program into something more electronic. Photoshop basics and the essentials for a photo class will be explored. Participants will be given access to sufficient projects, handoutsand tutorials to run a number of high-school photography courses.

B7 – InDesign Intermediate

Take your basic knowledge of InDesign to the next level. You will work hands-on and discover many time-saving techniques, including automation. You’ll also discover the most common errors in preparing files for proper output and how to fix them. The interchange between Photoshop files and InDesign will also be covered. Some prior knowledge of InDesign would be beneficial.

B8 –Photography and Lighting on a Shoestring
Low budget and limited equipment? No problem. This workshop will introduce you to simple do it yourself lighting ideas, on the cheap studio solutions and practical do it yourself photography projects that will give maximum results for minimum cost. All techniques take into consideration health and safety concerns. A few cameras will be provided for practice but please bring your own digital camera.

B9 – Creating the Audio World of Movies

We all know that any movie is enhanced by a gripping soundtrack: What would Jaws be without that chilling semitone motif? What about the shower scene in Psycho? The triumphant moment as ET flies across the face of the moon? We will demystify soundtracks in this hands-on workshop, using GarageBand and iMovie. You will see a variety of student projects that demonstrate how this can happen in your classroom, and then you will get the opportunity to try some projects yourself.

B10 – Photography Rights, Privacy Rights

What is the law on photographing in public? What are we teaching on the use of photographs? This workshops will focus on a set of guidelines to share with students on rights and wrongs. Issues of ethic sin photography and copyright will be illustrated with examples.

B11 – Introduction to Illustrator CS4

This workshop will bridge photography with the possibilities of Illustrator. Learn basic Illustrator tools when importing, tracing, and manipulating bitmap images: the same tools shared by other vector programs such as Flash. View the practical applications of Illustrator in creating graphics for print and the web as well as character design and animation. Teacher-created projects, ideas, and resources will be shared.

B12 – Light Graffitti

In this workshop, you will discover the exciting art form of light graffitti. You will learn of historical examples by Man Ray and Pablo Picasso and explore contemporary applications in advertising and urban art. In a hands-on component, you will try your hand at light graffiti and incorporate it into a digital work. Resources for the Grade 10 Media Arts Curriculum will be shared.
